What is a First Look?

If you’ve never heard the term before, a first look is a new wedding tradition that has become popular over the past few years.

Originally introduced in the United States, a first look is the private moment when a couple sees each other for the very first time, fully dressed for their wedding day. It’s an intimate pause before the celebration begins, filled with anticipation, emotion, and genuine joy.

Each partner gets ready separately before meeting in a quiet location, away from family and guests, to see each other for the very first time before the ceremony.

Picture yourself on your wedding day, with your partner standing there, looking gorgeous and waiting for you. You get closer to them before they slowly turn around to see you for the very first time, looking your absolute best.

During a first look, couples often exchange their vows, take in every little detail of each other’s attire, share quiet smiles, happy tears, and simply soak in the moment together. It’s not about posing, it’s about being fully present with one another.

A first look offers the opportunity to experience a meaningful moment together, away from curious eyes. Whether you’re naturally introverted or love being surrounded by people, there are so many reasons to include one in your wedding day.

Keep reading to discover why.

The Benefits of a First Look at Your Wedding

As wedding photographers, we’ll admit it… we get incredibly excited when our couples decide to include a first look in their timeline.

Why?

Because it’s one of the most intimate, emotional, and heartfelt moments of the entire day. It creates the perfect setting for genuine connection, allowing us to capture authentic photographs filled with tenderness, joy, and emotion.

With no guests waiting, no schedule rushing you along, and no distractions, you’re free to simply be together. It’s a rare opportunity to slow down and truly experience one another before the celebrations begin.

1. The Calm Before the Storm

The first look is also a small pause that closes around just the two of you before the wave of emotions to come with your loved ones. We also always set aside time for you to freshen up, have something to drink and eat, and touch up any makeup.

2. Splitting the Couple’s Session in Two

In our view, one of the great advantages of the first look is that it lets you break the couple’s photo session into separate moments. More often than not, our couples tell us they want to be present with their guests during the cocktail hour and not slip away for too long, so they can make the most of their time together. The first look is perfectly suited for this.

By planning this little moment alone together before the ceremony, we take the chance to capture your couple’s photos, let our creativity flow, and through it all, let you live the moment authentically and truly.

3. Catching the Most Beautiful Light

When the days are shorter (in spring, autumn, or winter), a first look becomes a valuable ally. It lets you share an intimate moment together while making the most of the day’s most beautiful light for your couple’s photos, before the sun disappears.

4. Choosing the Place and the Moment

Another advantage of the first look is being able to choose where you want to experience it. Perhaps your venue doesn’t have a beautiful green setting, or perhaps you’d like to bring some variety to your couple’s photos.

One of our roles as photographers is to help you find the perfect spot for this moment. Whether you love lakes, mountains, or urban landscapes, there are countless possibilities to make this moment even more memorable and true to who you are.

And you don’t have to go far to find wonderful places. It is often right at your venue or nearby. We have a keen eye for spotting them.

5. Inviting Your Dearest Loved Ones

The first look isn’t reserved for the couple alone. Sometimes the bride chooses to do a first look with her father, or the groom with his grandmother, or the couple with their children. These moments are easy to arrange, and they add something deeply meaningful to an already emotional moment. We know what we’re talking about… there’s always a tissue in our pocket for this part of the day.

6. Easing the Pressure

It’s true that after years, even decades of waiting, the big reveal can be stressful. Doing a first look lets you find your other half one-on-one or in a small group; the rush of serotonin and oxytocin, along with the kisses and hugs, will surely ease the pressure and the pre-ceremony nerves (Don’t take our word for it; it’s science!). That way, you’ll walk down the aisle, or wait for your bride-to-be, with more calm and savour even more of a moment that passes so quickly.

7. Capturing the Wedding Party Photos

Once the reveal is done and that quiet moment has been shared, we encourage our couples to invite their loved ones to join us for photos before the ceremony. This isn’t always possible (depending on when everyone arrives), but when it is, it frees up even more time at the cocktail hour to mingle with your guests and family before dinner.

When a First Look Isn’t the Best Option

1. To Honor Tradition

If tradition matters deeply to you and you want to keep all the anticipation of that great moment in the aisle, a first look may not be for you.

2. To Share This Moment with Your Loved Ones

If you dream of discovering your partner surrounded by all your loved ones, of sharing that moment of collective emotion and seeing their reactions alongside your own, it’s better to wait for the ceremony.

3. To Keep Your Wedding Attire Looking Its Best Until the Ceremony

If you’d rather keep your look (dress, makeup, hair) untouched before walking down the aisle, especially when the weather is uncertain, a first look may not be the ideal option.

4. To Savor Every Moment Before the Ceremony

If you’d like to experience your preparations separately, in the intimacy of your family or friends, without crossing paths with your partner before the “I do,” waiting for the ceremony will make that moment even more charged with emotion.

5. To Create a More Relaxed Wedding Day Timeline

Finally, if your ceremony takes place in the afternoon or early evening, with enough light left for your couple’s photos, there’s no need to add a first look. Your session can just as easily happen after the ceremony, in the soft evening light.
